Uniform & accoutrements
1) Headgear
Black or brown slouch hat of the “Beehive”, ”Bowler” or
“Planter” type.As an alternative a good quality kepi can be used.
2) Uniform Jacket or Shell jacket.
The most common jacket in 16th Tenn. should be a Columbus
Depot jacket of the type delivered to the Army of Tennessee from 62 to
65.This Jacket is of light gray, gray or butternut homespun / Jean cloth
with dark blue cuffs and collar and 5-7 buttons. The buttons should, if made
of brass, be of the “I” or Tennessee state seal type, but many of us have
lead or wooden buttons.
3) Shirt
Should be of civilian cut and made of cotton, or flannel with
tin or bone buttons.
4) Trousers
The most common trousers in the 16th should be of the
enlisted man’s pattern in homespun/jean cloth, light gray, gray or
butternut, with mule ears pockets and 4-5 tin buttons in front. The trousers
should be a little too wide and go up to the belly button. We do not accept
trousers with stripes along the outer seams.
Elastic suspenders is not allowed they should be made of a
cotton fabric with leather straps to hook up.
Tin buttons on the trousers.
5) Shoes
Of the type known as brogans they should be a little square
in the front, made of leather. With leather shoelaces and must be without
metal rings. The color is black or brown.
6) Socks
Old fashioned ski socks without bright colors.
7) Vest
Because the vest was something the soldier would buy on his
own accord, it is not a necessity. If you want one, buy a period civilian
type vest ( these could be of military cut, but made by a civilian tailor).
8) Cartridge Box
Most of us use the US M1855 cartridge box, with the leather
dyed black. Avoid cartridge boxes with U.S. stamped on the lid, this type
was not produced before 1864. As an alternative the Enfield cartridge box
may be used, a great number of these where procured by the south.
Please don’t put any brass buckles on the lid of either of
these boxes, its a Yankee thing.
A cartridge box sling is nice to have, but it is not a
required item. But if you do decide to buy one, please do not fit it with a
breastplate, it was not used in the army of Tennessee.
9) Cap pouch
US M1850
10) Belt buckles
Use either the square brass belt buckle with C.S.A stamped on
it ( this type comes also in a clipped corner version), or a simple frame
buckle.
11) Canteen
We recommend the M1858 smootheside canteen, or as an
alternative the “Gardner-pattern” wooden canteen of cedar tree or cherry
tree. No canteens used in the south had a chain in the cork, if you have
bought a model with a chain attached, please replace it with a leather
strap.
The strap used to carry the canteen should be made so short
that the canteen is carried above the waist.
12) Musket
Only 3-banded (Long) percussion rifles/smoothbores are
allowed and we recommend the Enfield riffled musket.
Some is of the opinion that the Enfields where struck bright
when thy came to the States, or that the bluening process was skipped in
order to produce cheaper muskets, however in our studies of the subject it
appears as if the North struck many of there Enfields bright in order to
make them look like there priced Springfield R.musket, and that the majority
of the Enfields in the south was indeed blued.
13) Bayonet
We use bayonets for either Springfield, Enfield or simply a
bayonet that fits the weapon used. Be sure when you buy a scabbard for your
bayonet that the scabbard is fitted with a brass point at the end.
14) Haversack
Is made of canvas either white, or tarred black it should not
be smaller than 30 by 30 Cm, and the strap should be so short that it is
carried above the waist.
14) Tin cup/Messeplate/Eating Utensils
The sort you get from the Sutler, they come in a great
variety.
15) Blanket and Knapsack
Blanket is about 213 by 150 cm, and preferable in one color
gray or brown, or at least not in a bright color.
Knapsack should be federal double or Isaac and Campel.
This is a mere guideline so before you buy anything please
feel free to contact Lt. Kiilerich or Cpl. Steincke talk with the other
members of the company as to what is the best stuff to buy and where, so you
can avoid bad products. |
